JANE HEIR

"Jane Heir "was created in the mid-80's at the time of the huge rent increases in New York City. We used the novel, Jane Eyre by Emily Bronte as a point of departure. It was done first at The Judson Church as part of a mixed program, then at The Middle Collegiate Church on East 7th Street and then at P.S. 122. The piece opens with the funeral of Mr. Rochester, who has finally died. An old suitor, St. John Rivers returns and takes Jane away on a trip. Before leaving she must sign her immense estate over to her neighbors, the rapacious couple Chester and Livia Servermoor. St. John takes Jane to the far antipodes where she falls into a trance and dances for years with the jungle folk. When at last she returns, she finds her estate has been taken over by the Livermoors who have sold it to Global Fad, an evil corporate empire. At first disguising themselves as Global Fadsters they try to understand what has happened, but soon Jane is driven mad by the loss of her inheritance.Text, choreography, direction Peter Wing Healey; Music Janet Norquist and Richard Gordon;Costumes Mary Brecht; Sets Bruce Mellet; Global Fad art direction Maria Manhattan; Global Fad set Sarah Brecht; production assistant David Briggs; Lights David Ferri; Orchestra: Gerry Hemingway, percussion; Helmut Lipsky, violin; Garfield Moore, cello; Richard Gordon, keyboard
